The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Kuala Lumpur celebrated the 77th Independence Day of Sri Lanka on 04 February 2025 in a flag hoisting ceremony. The event drew over 250 Sri Lankans residing in Malaysia, and Malaysian-Sri Lankans (Ceylonese community), underscoring the strong bonds of heritage and camaraderie.
The ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the national flag, followed by the rendition of the national anthem accompanied by the rhythm of traditional magul bera. The recitation of the jayamangala gatha further enriched the spirit of unity and national pride.
Demonstrating Sri Lanka's rich religious and cultural diversity, prayers were offered by religious leaders of the Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, and Christian faiths, invoking blessings for peace and prosperity. A solemn two-minute silence was observed in tribute to the freedom fighters and war heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s liberty.
The Independence Day messages of the President, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism of Sri Lanka were read out in Sinhala, Tamil and English, respectively, reflecting Sri Lanka’s commitment to inclusivity and unity.
Addressing the gathering, Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Kuala Lumpur, M.I. Mohamed Rizvi highlighted Sri Lanka’s resilience in overcoming challenges since gaining independence in 1948. He emphasized the nation's remarkable economic recovery and encouraged Sri Lankans and Malaysian-Sri Lankans to actively participate in the Clean Sri Lanka initiative, an ambitious national effort aimed at environmental sustainability and community well-being.
The event also featured a captivating cultural dance performance by the Sinhala Cultural Dance Troupe of the Sasana Abhiwurdhi Wardhana Society, showcasing Sri Lanka’s rich artistic traditions. The celebration was further enriched by a delectable spread of traditional Sri Lankan cuisine, providing attendees with a taste of the Island’s diverse culinary heritage.
The High Commission extends its heartfelt appreciation to religious leaders, dance performers, community leaders, attendees, food and service suppliers, volunteers, sponsors and well-wishers for their unwavering support and enthusiastic participation in the occasion.
