The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Islamabad, Pakistan, proudly celebrated the 78th Anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka on 4 February 2026 at the Official Residence of the High Commissioner, led by High Commissioner Fred Senevirathne together with the officers and staff of the Mission. The event was attended by members of the Sri Lankan community holding senior positions in leading companies and international organizations, including UN organizations, Sri Lankan students from universities near to Islamabad, as well as military officers undergoing training under Government-sponsored programmes.

The official proceedings commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by the High Commissioner, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. A two-minute silence was observed in solemn remembrance of the national heroes who made the supreme sacrifice for the freedom, sovereignty, and unity of the nation.

Religious observances followed, with clergy representing all major religions invoking blessings for the country and its people, reflecting Sri Lanka’s rich tradition of harmony and coexistence.

Independence Day messages from the President, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism of Sri Lanka were read out during the ceremony, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to unity, reconciliation, sustainable development, and national progress.

Addressing the gathering, High Commissioner Senevirathne delivered a thoughtful and forward-looking address, underscoring the shared responsibility of all Sri Lankans both at home and abroad in the ongoing process of nation-building.
