The Embassy of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in Doha celebrated the 78th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence under the theme “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” on 4 February 2026 at the Chancery premises, amidst a large number of Sri Lanka nationals. The celebrations commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag of Sri Lanka by the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the State of Qatar, Sithara Khan.
The flag hoisting was followed by the singing of the national anthem by the students of Stafford Sri Lankan School Doha. A two-minute silence was observed in honour of Sri Lanka’s national heroes and the victims of Cyclone Ditwah, followed by the lighting of the traditional oil-lamp by the Ambassador and students representing the four main ethnic communities, symbolizing unity and harmony.
Interfaith religious observances representing the Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic and Christian faiths were conducted to invoke blessings on the country and its people, after which the official Independence Day messages of the President, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism were read out by members of the staff of the Embassy.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Sithara Khan stated that when Sri Lanka won independence in 1948, it regained freedom with hope, courage and a shared dream of a better future. Referring to the Sri Lankan community in Qatar, she stated that they “…are an integral part of our nation’s story” and further stated that they “…are the backbone of our economy.” Quoting from the Independence Day message of the President of Sri Lanka, Anura Kumara Dissanayake to “…ensure that the macro-economic gains we have achieved, flow to communities of all ethnicities across all provinces of Sri Lanka”, Ambassador Khan appreciated the valuable contributions of the Sri Lankan community in Qatar for their meaningful contribution to Sri Lanka’s economy.
Ambassador Khan also called on the Sri Lankan community in Qatar “…to stand united, across ethnicities, religions, and regions, guided by mutual respect and shared purpose” and added that “…our diversity is our strength and unity is the foundation of our progress.”
She also expressed gratitude to the Amir of Qatar and the people of Qatar for their friendship and continued support.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, all the participants numbering around 250, were served a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast. The gathering including representatives of community associations, Members of the Sr Lankan business community and well-wishers participated in the celebrations.
