The Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Kingdom of Bahrain celebrated the 78th Independence day of Sri Lanka under the theme “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” at the premises of the Chancery on 4th February 2026 with the participation of members of the Sri Lankan community in Bahrain, including Representatives of the various Sri Lankan Associations.

The ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Bahrain Shanika Dissanayake, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. A two minutes silence was observed in remembrance of all who have sacrificed their lives for the nation, after which the traditional oil lamp was lit. Religious observances were conducted by clergy representing all four major religions, symbolizing Sri Lanka’s enduring tradition of religious harmony and peaceful coexistence. National Day messages of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath were read in Sinhala, Tamil, and English, respectively.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Shanika Dissanayake elaborated on the “Rebuilding   Sri Lanka” Initiative, emphasizing that it is not merely an effort to restore the past, but about envisioning and creating a future driven by the needs and aspirations of the people.  She encouraged Sri Lankans in Bahrain to actively contribute to national rejuvenation and  appreciated the Sri Lankan community for serving as a bridge between Bahrain and Sri Lanka, while remaining deeply connected to the aspirations of their homeland. Acknowledging the significant contributions made by Sri Lankan expatriates to national development, she highlighted the Government’s policy framework, “A Thriving Nation and a Beautiful Life,” which focuses on fostering inclusive economic growth, eradicating rural poverty, and advancing digital transformation towards a more unified and prosperous nation.

The celebrations were further enriched by traditional cultural dance performances performed by dancers from the Shasthra Ranga Kala Academy and the Sri Lankan School, reflecting Sri Lanka’s rich heritage and diversity. The event concluded with participants being served traditional Sri Lankan delicacies.
