Economic Affairs Division (Multilateral)
The Economic Affairs (Multilateral) Division plays a central role in advancing Sri Lanka’s economic interests through active engagement with international, intergovernmental, and regional organizations. The Division works to strengthen partnerships, promote economic cooperation, and articulate Sri Lanka’s priority policy positions at various economic multilateral forums. This is undertaken in close consultation with all relevant national stakeholders to ensure a coherent and strategic national representation. The Division also undertakes continuous follow-up on Sri Lanka’s engagements, ensuring their effective implementation.
In addition to its external engagement, the Division is responsible for organizing international, intergovernmental, and regional meetings hosted by Sri Lanka, facilitating high-level dialogue and cooperation on economic and development-related matters.
The Economic Affairs Division functions as the national focal point for several key regional and multilateral organizations dedicated to economic, strategic, and development cooperation. These include:
- Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA)
- Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD)
- Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC)
- The Colombo Plan
- African-Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO)
- World Trade Organization (WTO)
- BRICS
- World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
- The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
- The World Economic Forum (WEF)
Through these platforms, the Division contributes to shaping regional economic architecture, promoting trade, investment, connectivity, and knowledge exchange.
Technical Cooperation
The Division provides a range of facilitation services to support government institutions, international organizations, and other stakeholders. Key functions include:
- Verification and Recommendation of Visas:
Processing and recommending short-term entry visas, long-term entry visas, and resident visas for employees of international organizations assigned to duties in Sri Lanka.
- Visa Facilitation for Workshops and Seminars:
Coordinating visa arrangements for participants attending workshops, seminars, and related programmes organized by line ministries, including those conducted by the Sustainable Development Council under the Ministry of Finance.
- Facilitation of Procurement Notes:
Handling procurement notices received from ministries, departments, and public institutions to ensure appropriate dissemination and publicity.
- Visa Support for Government Agencies:
Assisting government institutions and agencies in obtaining required visas for official engagements.
- Verification of International and Offshore Companies:
Coordinating with Sri Lanka Missions abroad to verify the credentials of international and offshore companies as required by government entities.
