Consignment of Rice Donation from Myanmar to Sri Lanka is Being Shipped to Colombo

The consignment of 500 metric  tons of rice, donated by the Republic of the Union of Myanmar for the consumption of Cyclone Ditwa affected communities of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, has been officially handed over to the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Myanmar, prior to  being shipped to Sri Lanka.

The handing-over ceremony for the 10,000 bags of rice (500 metric tons) took place at the Asia World Port Terminal in Yangon on 13 January 2026. The Government of Myanmar was represented by  Deputy Minister, Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and resettlement, Than Soe,      Chief Minister of Yangon Region, U Soe Thein, Mayor and Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC), U Bo Htay, Director General, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zaw Phyo Win, and Chairman Ye Min Aung and members of the Myanmar Rice Federation.

Ambassador Prabashini Ponnamperuma, extended her gratitude for the valuable donation of rice, received at this critical phase of recovery, and conveyed that the consignment will be utilized for the benefit of cyclone- affected communities in Sri Lanka.

This consignment of rice consists of a part of the donation from Myanmar to Sri Lanka, for the Cyclone affected families, which also includes USD 100,000 in funds, 5.6 metric tons of medicines, and medical products and 2.16 metric tons of consumable goods, which have already been  dispatched via a special flight.
