Ambassador Ameer Ajwad highlights Cultural Aspects of Ramadan in Sri Lanka

In an exclusive interview with Saudi Arabia’s Arabic news daily, Okaz, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Ameer Ajwad, highlighted the deep-rooted and vibrant cultural traditions associated with the observance of Ramadan in Sri Lanka.

The Ambassador noted that Sri Lankans traditionally enjoy kanji (rice porridge) alongside dates when breaking their fast. Unique traditions such as sharing Iftar meals with neighbours of all faiths, preparing traditional delicacies, and organizing community Iftar gatherings reflect the spirit of unity, generosity, and harmony that characterizes Ramadan in Sri Lanka.

The Ambassador also underscored that the dates donated annually during the month of Ramadhan by the Government of Saudi Arabia for Muslims in Sri Lanka through King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) play a symbolic role in reflecting shared Islamic and cultural values, while further strengthening people-to-people relations between the two countries.

Ambassador Ajwad further highlighted that Iftar events in Sri Lanka serve as a platform for fostering mutual understanding among different communities and promoting social solidarity.

The exclusive interview with Sri Lanka’s envoy was published under the special Ramadan column of Okaz Arabic daily.
