Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington DC Welcomes the ‘Walk for Peace’

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington DC welcomed the ‘Walk for Peace’ on 10 February 2026, a walk by a group of Buddhist monks throughout the United States advocating world peace which was attracted by the people of the United States and around the world.

The Embassy participated in the Danna organized by the Sri Lankan community in the DMV area, offering traditional Sri Lankan cuisine at the National United Methodist Church, where over 200 Buddhist monks were in attendance.

The Ambassador, upon invitation by Secretary of District of Columbia Ms. Kimberly A. Basset attended the interfaith ceremony held at the Washington National Cathedral. Thousands of people were gathered around the Cathedral showing their support for the Walk for Peace. Ambassador Mahinda Samarasinghe was joined by Deputy Head of Mission Madhuka Wickramarachchi.

The Head Priest and the monks made a brief stop at the Embassy, where the Ambassador presented Atapirikara and ceremonially pinned the Sri Lankan flag on the robe of Ven. Pannakara. Embassy staff, together with members of the Sri Lankan community, offered flowers and extended greetings to the Walk. In addition, the Embassy distributed water bottles to all devotees participating in the Walk, a gesture that was warmly appreciated.
