78th Independence Day of Sri Lanka celebrated in the Philippines

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Philippines celebrated the 78th anniversary of Independence Day of Sri Lanka at the Official Residence in Manila on 4th February 2026.

In keeping with tradition, the event commenced with Ambassador Dr. Chanaka Talpahewa ceremonially hoisting the National Flag, singing of the National Anthem and observance of two minutes-silence in remembrance of all who sacrificed their lives on behalf of the motherland as well as to the victims of cyclone Ditwah in the country.  This was followed by lighting the traditional oil lamp by the religious dignitaries - Ven. Ratthapalo, Ven. Zhi Qin of Fo Guang Shan Mabuhay Temple; Rev. Fr. Viraj Fonseka of the San Antonio Padua Parish; Swami Acharya Prem Shankaranand Tirth, Hindu High Priest; and Mr. Shabeer Ahmadh.  Children who were present at the event were also invited to light the lamp.

Multi-faith religious rites were conducted in accordance with Buddhist, Christian, Hindu and Islam, to invoke blessings to the occasion.

The Independence Day messages of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath were read in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages, respectively.

Promotional videos on Rebuilding Sri Lanka, tourism and opportunities in trade and economic spheres provided by the Ministry, were screened.

After the official ceremony, the guests enjoyed traditional Kiribath and a buffet lunch arranged by the Embassy and were also given commemorative souvenirs.

The event was attended by over 100 including members of the Sri Lankan community, some who have travelled from distant places to Manila the previous day to be present at the event as well as Filipino well-wishers and members of the business community.
