Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon celebrates the 78th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka

The Embassy of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in Yangon celebrated the 78th Independence Day of Sri Lanka on 04th February 2026 at the Embassy premises, with the participation of the Ambassador, the staff of the Embassy and the members of the Sri Lankan community residing in Myanmar.

The celebrations commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag of Sri Lanka by the Ambassador, followed by the singing of the National Anthem, marking 78 years since Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948.

A key feature of the event was the offering of multi-religious blessings by Venerable Buddhist monks, Hindu priests, Muslim clergy, and Christian clergy, reflecting Sri Lanka’s long-standing tradition of religious harmony and cultural diversity. Blessings were invoked for peace, prosperity, and unity for Sri Lanka and its people, as well as for the continued friendship between Sri Lanka and Myanmar. Also, gilanpasa dana was offered to Buddhist monks, in the morning, prior to starting of the event.

During the ceremony, Independence Day messages of His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka, the Honorable Prime Minister, and the Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, were delivered by the Ambassador, the Minister of the Embassy, and the Attache`, respectively. These messages highlighted Sri Lanka’s national progress, unity, and foreign policy priorities. In her speech, Ambassador Prabashini Ponnamperuma, further explained the government’s policy priorities and the work carried out by the Embassy during the past year based on those policies and the work scheduled to be carried out during this year.

Members of the Sri Lankan community in Myanmar actively participated in the celebrations, demonstrating unity, patriotism, and a strong connection to the motherland. The event provided an opportunity for Sri Lankans who are living in Myanmar, to come together in a spirit of solidarity and shared national identity.

The celebrations concluded with the serving of traditional Sri Lankan cuisine and Ceylon tea, showcasing Sri Lanka’s rich culinary heritage and warm hospitality. The event was held in a warm and cordial atmosphere, symbolizing national unity, religious coexistence, and the enduring spirit of Sri Lanka.
