
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Kathmandu commemorated the 78th Anniversary of Independence on 04 February 2026 at the Embassy premises with the participation of the Sri Lankan community in Nepal.
The event commenced with the hoisting of the national flag of Sri Lanka followed by the national anthem, the lighting of the traditional oil lamp and the reading of the Independence Day messages of President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath. Religious dignitaries representing Buddhist, Hindu, Islam and Christian faiths invoked blessings on the special occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Ruwanthi Delpitiya recalled Sri Lanka’s journey since independence and highlighted the enduring values of democracy, unity, and resilience, while also calling on the Sri Lankan community to continue their contribution towards Sri Lanka’s economic advancement. The Ambassador highlighted and reaffirmed the strong bonds of friendship and solidarity between Sri Lanka and Nepal.
Following the official function, the participants were invited to a special breakfast of traditional milk rice and Sri Lankan delicacies.
