Celebration of the 78th Independence Day of Sri Lanka in Chennai

The Deputy High Commission of Sri Lanka in Chennai celebrated the 78th Independence Day of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on 04 February 2026 at the Chancery premises.

The official ceremony was attended by over 150 participants, including members of the Sri Lankan expatriate and business community, Indian well-wishers, Mission staff, and their family members. The programme commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by Dr. Ganesanathan Geathiswaran, Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka for Southern India, followed by the singing of the National Anthem of Sri Lanka. The traditional oil lamp was then lit by the Deputy High Commissioner and other dignitaries. A two-minute silence was observed in memory of the national heroes.

Multi-faith religious observances were conducted, with blessings imparted by Ven. Nugagolle Chandraratne Thera, Nayaka Thero, Maha Bodhi Society; Swami S. Sambasivam, Priest, Sri Kaligambal Kamateswarar Devasthanam; Rev. Don Bosco, Parish Priest, St. Theresa’s Church; and Imam Mohammed Akbar Ali Shah Aamiri, Deputy Chief Quazi, Royapettah Mosque.

The National Day Messages of His Excellency the President, the Hon. Prime Minister, and the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka were read by the Officers of the Mission.

While addressing the gathering, the Deputy High Commissioner highlighted the Government of Sri Lanka’s policy priorities on national rebuilding, economic recovery, strengthening the rule of law, and reconciliation. He also highlighted the Government’s commitment to relief, rehabilitation, and climate-resilient development following Cyclone Ditwah.

The Deputy High Commissioner expressed appreciation to the Government and people of India for their support and acknowledged the contributions of the Sri Lankan community and well-wishers in Tamil Nadu towards the relief efforts.

Concluding the official national day celebrations refreshments and traditional Sri Lankan breakfast were served to the participants.
