The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Nairobi commemorated the 78th Anniversary of the National Independence of Sri Lanka

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Nairobi commemorated the 78th Anniversary of the National Independence of Sri Lanka on 4 February 2026 at the Kenya Brahma Sabha, with the participation of members of the Sri Lankan expatriate community, the diplomatic corps, and invited guests.

The ceremony commenced with the invocation of blessings by religious dignitaries representing Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity, reflecting Sri Lanka’s rich multicultural and multi-religious heritage. Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Kenya, Ms. Ruvini De Silva, formally hoisted the National Flag of Sri Lanka, followed by the singing of the Sri Lankan National Anthem by the Choir of Daystar University, Nairobi. The National Anthem of the Republic of Kenya was then rendered, symbolising the close friendship between the two countries

Acting High Commissioner De Silva read out the Independence Day Message of His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka. Addressing the gathering, she highlighted the historical significance of Sri Lanka’s Independence, reflected on the challenges faced by the nation over the past decades including periods of conflict and recent economic difficulties followed by natural disasters and outlined the Government of Sri Lanka’s ongoing Rebuilding Sri Lanka Programme aimed at restoring basic needs, sanitation and health services, rebuilding essential infrastructure, strengthening livelihoods and assets, and revitalizing the domestic economy. She further underscored the longstanding and friendly relations between Sri Lanka and Kenya, and expressed her sincere wishes for the continued health, peace, and prosperity of the peoples of Sri Lanka and Kenya.
