Embassy of Sri Lanka in Ethiopia celebrates the 78th Independence Day of Sri Lanka at the Embassy Premises in Addis Ababa

The Embassy of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in Addis Ababa proudly commemorated the 78th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, at the Embassy premises, with the participation of Embassy staff members and their family members, in a dignified and solemn setting reflecting national pride and unity.

The programme commenced with the gathering of Embassy staff and family members, followed by the hoisting of the National Flag of Sri Lanka by the Embassy Attaché in a respectful and patriotic atmosphere.

Subsequently, the observance continued indoors with the playing of the National Anthems of the host country, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, during which all participants stood in reverence, reaffirming mutual respect and the cordial relations between the two nations.

The celebrations proceeded with the traditional Lighting of the Oil Lamp Ceremony, signifying peace, prosperity, and the guiding values of harmony and goodwill that underpin Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage.

A central component of the programme was the reading of official Independence Day messages. The messages of His Excellency the President, the Honourable Prime Minister, and the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on the occasion of the 78th Anniversary of Independence were read by Embassy staff members.

The programme concluded with Sri Lankan tea and refreshments, providing an opportunity for staff and family members to interact in a warm and convivial environment, marking the occasion in a spirit of togetherness and shared pride.

The celebration of the 78th Independence Day of Sri Lanka at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Addis Ababa reflected the enduring importance of independence, national identity, and unity, while reaffirming Sri Lanka’s longstanding friendship with Ethiopia.
