The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York celebrates Independence Day

The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York celebrated the 78th Independence Day on 4 February 2026 in the Mission Premises.

The Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations Jayatha Jayasuriya hoisted the national flag which was followed by the signing of the national anthem.

Multi-religious observances were conducted by respective religious leaders.

The Independence Day messages from the President, Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism were read out in Sinhala, Tamil and English respectively.

The Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka while addressing the gathering recalled the progress made by Sri Lanka after gaining independence and the importance of coming together in nation building.

The event was attended by the staff of the Mission.
