
High Commission of Sri Lanka in Kuala Lumpur hosted a Symbolic Thai Pongal Celebration with the participation of representatives from Sri Lankan communities in Malaysia, together with the staff of the High Commission.
In his remarks, Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Malaysia M. I. Mohamed Rizvi, , highlighted the importance of Thai Pongal as a festival of gratitude, unity, and hope. He noted that the celebration reflects respect for nature and shared values of harmony, prosperity, and togetherness among Sri Lankans living overseas.
Speaking on behalf of the Tamil community, Deputy Chairman of the Malaysia–Sri Lanka Business Council (MSLBC)Magendran Muthiah, , explained the cultural and spiritual meaning of Thai Pongal among Tamil people. He stated that the traditional boiling of milk symbolises abundance, good fortune, and a positive beginning for the New Year, while expressing thanks to the Sun for prosperity.
The event included the traditional boiling of milk ceremony and the sharing of authentic Sri Lankan Pongal dishes, creating a warm and festive atmosphere.
The High Commission continues to promote Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage abroad and strengthen unity and people-to-people ties within the Sri Lankan community in Malaysia.
