
Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Brazil, C.A. Chaminda I. Colonne recently held a series of meetings with senior officials, Secretary of the Secretariat of Asia and Pacific, Ambassador Susan Kleebank; Director of Department of India, South and Southeast Asia, Ambassador Everton Frask Lucero; and Head of the Department of Trade Policy, Minister Fellipe Hees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil (Itamaraty), Brasilia.
Ambassador Chaminda Colonne highlighted the present Government´s policies on South-South cooperation and enhancing economic and trade ties with Brazil and other nine (09) countries concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka Embassy in Brazil namely, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Guyana, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay and Suriname.
Both sides discussed in details ways and means of enhancing and consolidating existing relations and cooperation in the fields of trade, economic, political, education, etc. for the mutual benefits.
As the total trade turnover between Sri Lanka and Brazil is approximately US$ 150 Mn., both sides emphasized the need of accelerating the bilateral economic diplomacy. Identifying the long distance between two countries as the main obstacle for bilateral trade, both sides discussed in improving sea route connections between two countries. Holding Second Round of Political Consultations between two Foreign Ministries in 2026; Brazilian participation at the upcoming Sri Lanka Expo 2026; access for Sri Lankan Exports like cinnamon, gems, tea, rubber based products, apparel, etc. in the Brazilian market; Brazilian investments in Port City Colombo; enhancing relations through bilateral Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding were among other topics they discussed.
Head of the Division of India and South Asia, Minister André Saboia Martins; Advisor to the Department of India, South and Southeast Asia, Talita Cardoso Lima; Deputy Head of the Division of India and South Asia, Andrea Flores Nepomuceno were present during the discussions with Ambassador Lucero.
Ambassador Kleebank, Ambassador Lucero and Minister Hees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil assured their fullest cooperation and support for strengthening Sri Lanka – Brazil relations in the coming years.
Minister Counsellor (Commercial), Chathurika Perera joined Ambassador Chaminda I. Colonne during the discussions from the Embassy.
