
The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Jordan, J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara, met with the Chairman of the Jordanian Businessmen Association (JBA), Ayman Alawneh, on 4 November 2025, to discuss ways to further strengthen economic relations and explore new avenues of cooperation between Sri Lanka and Jordan. The meeting also focused on renewing the agreement for the establishment of the Joint Jordanian–Sri Lankan Business Council, in collaboration with the National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka (NCE).
During the discussion, Ambassador Wijegunasekara briefed the Chairman Alawneh on Sri Lanka’s recent economic developments and emphasized the importance of expanding collaboration between the business communities of both countries. She highlighted that renewal of the Joint Business Council agreement would provide an effective platform for the exchange of information, experiences, and expertise, while promoting bilateral economic and trade opportunities, particularly in priority sectors such as tourism, logistics, food industries, agriculture, energy, and information technology.
The Ambassador Wijegunasekara further underlined that strengthening air connectivity, easing visa restrictions for Sri Lankans, and enhancing trade facilitation are key steps toward deepening bilateral economic cooperation. She also noted the significance of establishing direct air links to promote tourism, business travel, and investment flows between the two countries.
Ambassador reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to supporting initiatives by the Jordanian private sector to explore new and promising investment opportunities in Sri Lanka, stressing that Sri Lanka remains a strategic destination for trade and investment in the region due to its geographical location and diverse economic potential.
For his part, Chairman Alawneh welcomed the proposal to revitalize the Joint Business Council, reaffirming Jordan’s keen interest in strengthening economic cooperation with Sri Lanka. He expressed the Association’s full support for initiatives that enhance collaboration between the two countries’ business sectors. He also emphasized the importance of organizing joint economic forums and reciprocal visits of business delegations, noting that such engagements foster direct communication among entrepreneurs and create a favorable environment for mutually beneficial partnerships.
It is noteworthy that the volume of trade exchange between Jordan and Sri Lanka amounted to approximately USD 79 million in 2024, compared to USD 90 million in 2023.
The meeting was attended by members of the JBA Board of Directors and officials of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Jordan.
