The flagship programme titled “Sri Lanka Ambassador’s Tree Planting Initiative” organized by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh was held on 25 October 2025 at Al-Ahsa National Park in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The objective of the programme is to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia while supporting the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) which targets planting of 10 billion trees across the Kingdom under 2030 Vision, reinforcing both countries’ shared commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action.
The event was organized under the patronage of the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ameer Ajwad in collaboration with the Saudi National Center for Vegetation Cover and Combating Desertification (NCVC) in Al-Ahsa.
Addressing the gathering Ambassador Ajwad emphasized that the planting of trees is a shared responsibility to contribute for combating global environmental challenges and decertification. It also provides a wide range of benefits to humanity environmentally, economically, socially and culturally. He thanked all the participants for joining the discussion programme.
The staff members of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Riyadh along with their families, and members of the Sri Lankan community from Dammam and Jubail actively participated in the event demonstrating their enthusiasm, commitment and goodwill to this meaningful environmental cause.
Senior officials from the Saudi National Center for Vegetation Cover and Combating Desertification (NCVC) – Eastern Region, participated during this tree planting programme.
Sri Lanka Embassy in Riyadh launched the “Sri Lanka Ambassador’s Tree Planting Initiative” in the year 2024 and planted trees in five different parks in Riyadh region namely Salam Park, Ar Rabi Park, Malqa Park, Al Darseena Park and Irqah Park.
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh will continue to organize “Sri Lanka Ambassador’s Tree Planting Initiative” in the other regions of the Kingdom in the days ahead.
