The Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Kingdom of Bahrain, in partnership with the People’s Bank of Sri Lanka, hosted a Financial Literacy Awareness Workshop on 19 September 2025 at the Embassy premises. This initiative was held in alignment with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka’s designation of September as Financial literacy Month. The program was conducted to empower Sri Lankan domestic workers in Bahrain by enhancing their financial knowledge and management skills, enabling them to make informed decisions and plan for a more secure future.
The event commenced with opening remarks by Ambassador Shanika Dissanayake, who emphasized the importance of financial literacy as a tool for empowerment and stability in the lives of migrant workers. She highlighted the value of responsible saving, smart financial planning, and investing for the future, noting that these skills would not only benefit the workers themselves but also their families back home.
Minister and Head of Chancery of the Embassy, Madhuka Silva, provided vital information on consular matters, with particular emphasis on the importance of timely renewal of passports along with other essential services offered by the Embassy. Labour Officer Gothami Ranasinghe outlined the procedures for renewing registration with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), stressing the need to keep registrations valid to safeguard workers’ welfare and ensure their legal protection abroad.
Deputy General Manager (Retail Banking & Overseas Customer Services) of the People’s Bank, Aruni Liyanagunawardana, together with her team, joined the program virtually and conducted an interactive awareness session on opening and maintaining Non-Resident Foreign Currency (NRFC) accounts. The Deputy General Manager also shared valuable practical guidance on managing personal finances, responsible remittances, and long-term savings plans.
The Embassy of Sri Lanka extends its sincere appreciation to the Chairman of the People’s Bank of Sri Lanka for collaborating in this impactful initiative for the welfare of Sri Lankan migrant workers.
The Mission remains committed to supporting Sri Lankans in Bahrain by facilitating programmes that promote their rights, welfare, and economic wellbeing.
