Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand and Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe met with the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Eksiri Pintaruchi on 17 February 2025 to discuss key areas of cooperation and further strengthen the longstanding relations between the two countries.
The Permanent Secretary warmly welcomed Ambassador Edirisinghe and extended congratulations on her assumption of duties. During the meeting, both dignitaries underscored the significance of 2025, the year that marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand. They exchanged views on the planned activities to commemorate this milestone reflecting the deep-rooted cultural, economic, and political ties between the two countries.
The discussions also covered a range of important bilateral and regional issues, including the upcoming 6th BIMSTEC Summit and the continued engagement in bilateral Political Consultations scheduled to be held in March 2025 at the Foreign Secretary level. Furthermore, both sides deliberated on collaborative efforts in addressing humanitarian concerns, particularly the rescue and repatriation of stranded Sri Lankans in Myanmar with the assistance of Thailand.
The Permanent Secretary reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Sri Lanka across multiple sectors, reinforcing the shared aspirations for regional peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing their dedication to enhancing the strong and historic friendship between Sri Lanka and Thailand, paving the way for deeper collaboration in the years to come. Director General, Sasirith Tangurat; Head of Chancery of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Thailand, A.W.S. Samanmali and Counsellor (Commercial) at the Embassy, Vireshika Bandara also attended the meeting.
