South America Division
The South America Division is tasked with coordinating matters connected with Sri Lanka’s bilateral relations with the United States of America, Canada and 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries focused on political, economic, education and other spheres. The Division, through the four Bilateral Missions located in the US and Canada and Bilateral Missions located in Cuba and Brazil, monitors the political and socio-economic developments in the respective countries and countries of concurrent accreditation.
Sri Lanka’s resident bilateral representation in the United States includes Sri Lanka’s Embassy in Washington DC and the Consulate General in Los Angeles. Sri Lanka’s resident representation in Canada includes Sri Lanka’s High Commission in Ottawa and the Consulate General in Toronto. Sri Lanka’s resident bilateral representation in Latin America and the Caribbean includes the Sri Lanka Embassy in Brasilia, Brazil and the Sri Lanka Embassy in Havana, Cuba.
The Division is engaged in facilitating a robust relationship with the countries in the Americas encompassing the entire gamut of Sri Lanka’s relations through several mechanisms/ tasks/ programmes, inter alia, incoming and outgoing high level and official visits, Annual Partnership dialogues. The Division serves as the first point of contact for communication with resident Missions of the countries based in Colombo on bilateral matters. The tasks include coordination and taking forward initiatives in partnership with line agencies of the Government of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Missions overseas and, where necessary, with the resident Missions in Colombo.
