President Maithripala will leave for China on a Four-Day State Visit

President Maithripala Sirisena will leave for China this afternoon commencing a four-day state visit on the invitation of President of China Xi Jinping.

The President, along with many other world leaders, is scheduled to attend the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2015, which will be held in Boao, Hainan Province from March 26 to 29 under the theme of Asia’s New Future: Towards a Community of Common Destiny.

Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) is a non-governmental and non-profit international organization with a fixed conference date and a fixed domicile.
Proposed in 1998 by Fidel V. Ramos, former President of the Philippines, Bob Hawke, former Prime Minister of Australia, and Morihiro Hosokawa, former Prime Minister of Japan, BFA was formally inaugurated on February 27, 2001.

During his stay in China, President Maithripala is expected to hold bilateral discussions with his counterpart as well as Prime Minister and senior government officials. The talks will center on further enhancing cooperation between the two countries in areas of trade, investment, tourism, culture, science and technology, and regional and international affairs, in addition to Sri Lanka – China Free Trade Agreement.

Since the establishment of full diplomatic ties in 1957, Sri Lanka has continuously maintained close and friendly relations with China. The two countries have regularly exchanged high-level visits resulting in a variety of agreements. China has emerged as one of Sri Lanka’s key development partners in the recent years.

Sri Lanka was among the first countries to recognize the People’s Republic of China.

Swiss Foreign Minister concludes successful visit to Sri Lanka : 16 to 18 March 2015

Dr. Didier Burkhalter, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland paid  an official visit to Sri Lanka from 16 to 18 March 2015, accompanied by a high level delegation. This was the first official visit of a Swiss Foreign Minister to Sri Lanka.

President Attends Commonwealth Day Observance 2015 : 9th Mar 2015

President Maithripala Sirisena, the current Commonwealth Chair-in-Office, attended the Commonwealth Day Observance at Westminster Abbey today, Mar. 9, 2015.

Head of the Commonwealth, Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II; other Royal Family members; the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Mr. Kamalesh Sharma; and other distinguished guests attended the event.

The Commonwealth Day Observance of 2015 was held under the theme of “A Young Commonwealth”. Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, the first female of speaker of the Parliament of Bangladesh Dr Shirin Chaudhury MP and many others spoke at the event.

During her message, Elizabeth II noted the advantages of mutual cooperation and understanding among the Commonwealth Nations, saying “In the Commonwealth we are a group of 53 nations of dramatically different sizes and climates. But over the years, drawing on our shared history, we have seen and acted upon the huge advantages of mutual cooperation and understanding, for the benefit of our countries and the people who live in them.”

The Commonwealth Day Observance is the largest multi-faith celebration of the United Kingdom and is usually attended by the Chair-in-Office, apart from the Royal Family and the Commonwealth Secretary-General and other dignitaries. President Maithripala Sirisena will remain as the Commonwealth Chair-in-Office until this November.

Mrs. Jayanthi Sirisena, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs, Mr. D.M. Swaminathan, and Provincial Councillor Mr. Azad Sally were also present at the event.
